A college sports accident, successfully treated by a chiropractor, became a game changing event in early the life of Dr. Westley Kuns. In 1992 while attending Oregon State University, Dr. Kuns was studying physiology, and was a member of the college rowing team. He developed a pain in his arm, and was diagnosed as having carpel tunnel syndrome. When the medical doctor’s advice failed to help, Dr. Kuns visited a Chiropractor who told him he simply had a problem with a nerve in his neck. Following a simple treatment, the pain was relieved, and he got back on the team.
The incident, however, got him thinking about changing his career path from Physiology to Chiropractic. So, after graduating from OSU, he went on to Western States Chiropractic College. In 1996, he graduated and took over an existing Doctor’s practice in Gresham, Oregon.
At first, in addition to working with patients in Gresham, Dr. Kuns was also a professional rodeo Chiropractor, where he spent a lot of time treating people with injuries he would probably never see in family practice. After four years, he left the rodeo circuit to focus on his growing family and practice in Oregon.
Back in Gresham, Dr. Kuns began investing in technologies, such as surface electromyography, computerized duel range of motion, and muscle testing equipment to better serve his injured patients and better analyze their injuries and document their care. He discovered this to be more important in the days of evidence based chiropractic.
Then, Dr. Kuns had another life altering event. While bending down to install some cables on a computer, he twisted just enough to injure his back. The pain kept him in bed for a week. Tests showed his disc was desiccated and torn, but not yet herniated. The incident was painful enough to cause Dr. Kuns to investigate a new, non invasive technology called axial decompression. Many doctors were having tremendous success using the procedure for reducing or eliminating the pain from disc problems like his own without resorting to surgery.
One such method, call the DRS Protocol™ had already helped thousands of suffering patients in one Indiana city where the treatment was first developed, leading Dr. Kuns to invest in the equipment and education needed to bring DRS™ to Gresham.
Now armed with the latest back and neck pain technology, Dr. Kuns is saving people from surgery, one patient at a time.
